A study of white anemones, observed in different stages of opening and set within a painted wooden frame.
This piece follows the gentle movement of the plant as buds unfurl into bloom, each flower held at a slightly different stage. The composition rises through a series of slender stems, allowing the eye to move naturally between opening buds, newly opened flowers and fully formed blooms.
The flowers emerge beyond the surface of the backing, creating depth and shadow within the frame. Rather than presenting the plant as a gathered arrangement, the composition focuses on a small section brought into view — a moment of growth observed and held in place.
Inspired by the restrained beauty of the white Galilee anemone, the palette allows the form of the flowers to take precedence. Soft ivory petals surround dark centres, while delicate foliage provides structure and balance beneath the blooms.
The frame forms part of the work. Painted in a warm, muted tone and gently aged by hand, it provides a quiet backdrop for the study whilst allowing the flowers and their shadows to remain the focus.
As the light changes throughout the day, shadows shift across the backing and frame, altering the balance of the composition and revealing new details within the work.
The anemones are fixed within the depth of the frame, where glass would traditionally sit, allowing the piece to exist between sculpture and wall piece.
The frame measures approximately 21 × 30cm.
Created as a one-off botanical study of the white Galilee anemone.
