A rose branch, observed in a moment of quiet change and set within a vintage wooden frame.

This piece follows the natural movement of the rose as it opens, softens, and begins to fade — blooms turning, petals loosening, and structure shifting over time. The branch moves across and beyond the frame, creating a sense of continuation, as if only a single section of a larger plant has been brought into focus.

Flowers are held at different stages — some open and full, others beginning to fall away — allowing the piece to sit somewhere between presence and passing. A single petal rests below, caught within the frame, marking a brief moment that would otherwise go unnoticed.

The frame forms part of the composition, grounding the movement of the branch as it reaches and settles across the space.

The frame is a wooden piece, selected for its depth and character, then carefully restored and finished with a soft wax. Its surface carries subtle variations and marks of age, which form part of the work.

As the light changes, so too do the shadows cast across the backing and frame. These shift throughout the day, adding a quiet, painterly quality and allowing the piece to feel slightly different depending on its setting.

The branch is fixed within the depth of the frame, where glass would traditionally sit, allowing the work to exist between sculpture and wall piece.

The frame measures approximately 45cm by 55cm.

The full composition extends to around  55cm by 61cm with a depth of around 15cm.

Created as a one-off botanical study, this piece reflects both the structure of the rose and the fleeting nature of its bloom — something observed, held briefly, and allowed to pass.
