A magnolia branch, observed in early bloom and set within a painted frame.

This piece follows the natural movement of magnolia as it shifts from bud to full flower — each bloom opening, softening, and turning over time. The branch moves across and beyond the frame, breaking the boundary between object and image, with flowers placed in varying stages to create a quiet sense of progression.

The frame itself forms part of the work. Painted by hand, its surface shifts subtly in tone depending on the light — at times deep and muted, at others lighter and more open — working in contrast with the softness of the flowers.

As the light changes, so too do the shadows cast across the frame and backing. These become part of the composition, appearing and receding throughout the day, giving the piece a changing, almost painterly quality.

The magnolia branch is fixed within the depth of the frame, where glass would traditionally sit, allowing the work to exist somewhere between sculpture and wall piece.

The frame measures 42 × 29.7cm, with the composition extending beyond it to approximately 59cm in height, 44cm in width, and 14cm in depth.

Created as a one-off botanical study, this piece reflects both the structure of magnolia and the feeling of light and space within the home.

Designed as a considered study of magnolia in space, it brings a quiet sense of movement and change — something that settles, but never feels entirely still.
